Oregon's 'David's House' Will Serve Those With Traumatic Brain Injuries

Decked with solar panels on its low-pitched roof and made of recycled material throughout, "David’s House" will not only showcase new energy-saving "green” innovations, but will also provide a home for people with disabilities resulting from traumatic brain injuries. National NeighborWorks Week — Now In Its 24th Year — Is Coming to Your Neighborhood June 2-9

During NeighborWorks Week, local NeighborWorks organizations mobilize tens of thousands of volunteers, businesspeople, neighbors, friends, and local and national elected and civic leaders in a week of neighborhood change and awareness. They rehab and repair homes, paint and landscape properties, conduct neighborhood tours, recognize successful partnerships, and host events that educate, train and inform. NeighborWorks Multifamily Business Soars in Fiscal Year 2006, Adding Nearly 7,000 Units

Fiscal year 2006 was another successful period for the NeighborWorks Multifamily Initiative with 6,964 new units added to its total portfolio.

“The NeighborWorks Multifamily Initiative is now in its tenth year and is going stronger than ever,” said Frances Ferguson, national director for the initiative. “Members coast-to-coast are finding ways to bring decent, attractive and low-cost housing to thousands of families.”

Ferguson noted that NeighborWorks organizations use a variety of development tools to make their projects work, including aggressively bidding for tax credit projects, mixing market-rate units with below-market rate units and even mixing light commercial use within residential projects. National Housing Groups Announce Support of Comprehensive Education and Counseling Standards

Leaders from lending institutions, community development organizations, real estate, mortgage insurance companies and the secondary mortgage market have released national standards for consumer homeownership education and counseling. The leaders say the new standards could prevent a future wave of foreclosures. Read more.

Stopping Foreclosure in Michigan — Comerica Bank and NeighborWorks America Partner to Offer Help
In Detroit — where the highest rate of real estate foreclosures in the nation's largest 100 metro areas was posted during the first three months of 2007 — foreclosure prevention programs are in high demand, even as out-of-state companies parachute in to sell the swelling supply of homes already returned to the banks, according to an article in the Detroit Free Press. Taking the lead in offering options to distressed homeowners is a foreclosure prevention program in Detroit and Lansing sponsored by Comerica Bank and NeighborWorks America. Read more.
 
Rebecca Gebhardt of AHC in Virginia Wins 'Connect with Kids Champion' Award
Rebecca Gebhardt, a resident services coordinator at Ft. Henry Apartments in Arlington, Virginia, was selected as a “Connect with Kids Champion” by the Arlington Partnership for Children, Youth and Families. The property is managed by NeighborWorks member, AHC Inc.

Noemi Vega, Neighborhood Housing Services of New York Staff Member, Honored as 'Outstanding Woman of 2006' by Major Hispanic Newspaper

NeighborWorks organizations staff are always doing great things and sometimes getting recognized for them. Such is the case of Noemi Vega, who works with Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) of New York City. Vega, who has worked as a housing counselor at NHS since 2001, was recently distinguished as an "Outstanding Woman of 2006" by a major New York City Hispanic newspaper, El Diario. Read more.

 
NeighborWorks Helps Ohio Homeowners Facing Foreclosure — More than 7,000 Called Hotline
One year after the launch of the NeighborWorks Ohio Foreclosure Prevention Initiative, the Homeownership Preservation Foundation has reported more than 7,000 calls to the 1-888-995-HOPE hotline in Ohio. More than 3,000 of those Ohio homeowners completed counseling with hotline counselors, and more than 500 were referred for additional one-on-one counseling and assistance from 12 local homeownership counseling organizations across the state. NeighborWorks Alliance of New York State Holds Housing Panel Discussion

A group of about 100 New York affordable housing professionals recently convened to hear three distinguished panelists explore Governor Eliot Spitzer's vision for affordable housing in New York State. The event was sponsored by the NeighborWorks Alliance of New York State (formerly The New York Network) and was billed as a "Policy Panel and Luncheon." Deborah Boatright, district director for the Northeast district of NeighborWorks America, moderated the panel. Read more.

 

Neighborhood Housing Services of the Inland Empire, California, Mentioned in Op-Ed

Community Building and Organizing Annual Report

An annual summary of the first full year of the NeighborWorks Community Building and Organizing Initiative reflects the community impact of 32 initiative members. Here are some highlights:

  • Almost $40 million ($39.8 million) of community investment as a result of member activities. These investments were made in the form of community improvements such as playgrounds and community facilities (57 percent), real estate investment (36 percent), and organizational support (7 percent),
  • 163,000 volunteer hours invested in community work and participation,
  • 861 partnerships with public and private sector entities, an average of 28 partnerships per organization (31 reporting).

'The Credit Boom and Bust in Lower-Income Markets'

According to new research by the Brookings Institution, lending in lower-income markets has radically changed in recent decades, highlighted by a dramatic increase in the supply of credit. However, little is known about lending variations across different lower-income markets, nor the underlying forces affecting borrowing patterns. Read the study.

 
The Sticker Shock of Sprawl: Housing/Transportation Tradeoffs in Metro Kansas City

"If housing policy is to achieve its full potential, it cannot be crafted and executed in isolation," according to Bruce Katz, vice president and director of the Metropolitan Policy Program at the Brookings Institution. During a speech at the Kansas City Housing Matters Forum, April 17, Katz argued that for housing policy to be fully utilized, "it must be shaped in concert with related policies like transportation, land use, economic development, financial services, and even education."
